Vietnam is a beautiful country with a rich history and culture, making it a popular tourist destination. However, travelling in a foreign country can be challenging, especially if you don’t speak the local language. Fortunately, there are apps that can help you navigate Vietnam with ease.
- Grab
Grab is a popular ride-hailing app in Vietnam that allows you to book car or motorbike taxis, and even order delivery food and send packages. With its user-friendly interface and reliable service, Grab is a convenient way to get around Vietnam. You should register the account in advance with your phone number before your trip. The payment could be done by cash (VND) or by credit card. Grab is also available in other SEA countries like Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, etc. Alternatives to Grab in Vietnam are BE, Gojek, or Taxi Xanh SM (electric taxi)
- Google Maps
Google Maps is an essential app for any traveller in Vietnam. It provides detailed maps and directions, making it easy to navigate the country whether you’re walking, driving, or taking public transportation. Additionally, Google Maps allows you to read reviews of attractions, restaurants, and other points of interest. Google Maps is better than Apple Maps in Vietnam, from experience.
- TripAdvisor
TripAdvisor is a go-to app for travellers in Vietnam. It provides user-generated reviews and recommendations for hotels, restaurants, attractions, and more. You can also use it to book tours and activities in advance. However, it’s worth noting that booking tours through TripAdvisor can be more expensive than booking directly with local travel agencies. Tours provided on TripAdvisor cover a wide range of prices. You should pick a tour in the middle or high price range because the cheap one is not so good despite the positive review.
For vegan and vegetarian travellers, HappyCow is an app that provides a list of vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Vietnam. It includes detailed information on menus, prices, and reviews, making it easy to find food options that meet your dietary needs.
Vietnamese is a complex language, and not everyone speaks English fluently. Google Translate is an app that can help you communicate with locals by translating words and phrases from English to Vietnamese and vice versa. It also features a camera function that can translate written text instantly, making it easier to read menus and signs.
6. Booking
Booking.com is a booking app that specializes in finding affordable accommodation in Vietnam. It offers various options, including hotels, hostels, and apartments, with prices to suit every budget. With Booking, you can easily compare prices, read reviews, and book your accommodation in advance. Besides that, Agoda, Traveloka, and Airbnb are also available in Vietnam. In my personal experience, Booking.com usually offers the best price.
For bus or train or flight tickets, I recommend you book directly with the provider or via an agency. They will support you better than booking via an online agency. If you want to book yourself, 12go.asia, Baolau or Traveloka are recommended.
All in all, these apps might be helpful in most cases when travelling in Vietnam. However, a bag of knowledge is always a Swiss Army knife that serves you in every situation. Our TVJ blog here is one of the sources that you can trust.
