Hanoi’s Egg Coffee: A Delightful Discovery
Hanoi’s egg coffee has become a must-try for visitors, offering a unique and incredibly tasty twist on the classic drink. This exotic concoction owes its existence to the ingenuity of Nguyen Van Giang, a barista at a prestigious hotel during French colonial rule. Faced with limited access to milk in the 1940s, he embarked on a creative quest. Inspired by cappuccinos served to foreign guests, he experimented with using readily available egg yolks to create a similar experience. After several attempts, he perfected the recipe in 1946, resulting in the delightful egg coffee we know today. The secret lies in a rich, frothy mixture of egg yolks, sugar, butter, and condensed milk, carefully layered upon hot coffee for a deliciously smooth and sweet treat.

  1. Giang Cafe: The Birthplace of Egg Coffee
Craving the original Vietnamese egg coffee? Look no further than Giang Cafe, located at 39 Nguyễn Hữu Huân (open daily from 7 am to 10 pm). This legendary cafe is where it all began in 1946, thanks to Mr. Nguyen Van Giang’s ingenious invention. His secret recipe, now overseen by his son Nguyen Van Dao, continues to draw crowds.
My first attempt was met with overwhelming crowds, so I made a 7 am return the next day – a game-changer! Greeted by friendly faces (including Mr Dao himself!), the language barrier didn’t hinder their warm hospitality. With a vast menu, stick to the classic “Cafe Trung – Nong” (hot egg coffee) for an authentic experience. Served in a hot water bath to maintain temperature, it’s the perfect way to start your day at the birthplace of this iconic drink.

  1. Cafe Lam: A Hidden Gem (Literally)
Locating Cafe Lam was an adventure! Despite rave reviews, I found myself wandering into three different cafes before stumbling upon the right one. But here’s the key: this specific location at 29 Nguyễn Hữu Huân (look for the “Passion for Shoemaking” sign) is the only one serving egg coffee (within the area I explored). Worried about missing out? Fear not! They also have fantastic Vietnamese iced coffee.
Here’s a tip to avoid my confusion: the entrance is actually tucked to the right of Cafe Lam, under a red sign that says “Galuti.” Trust me, some Vietnamese cafes are masters of disguise! Despite the initial challenge, the coffee was delivered. Cafe Lam’s egg coffee, while slightly less creamy than others, was still fantastic. Just remember, location is key! Learn from my mistake and avoid a scavenger hunt – head straight to 29 Nguyễn Hữu Huân and enjoy!

  1. Cafe Dinh: Live Music, Egg Coffee, and a Hidden Entrance
Nestled near Hoan Kiem Lake, Cafe Dinh offers a charming escape with live music and a family-friendly atmosphere. Keep an eye out for pickpockets, a common concern in tourist areas.
Finding the cafe can be a fun adventure! Look for a travel booking office on your left and a phone repair shop on your right. Enter the small alleyway under the “Shop 13 Cafe Dinh” sign and follow the path to the second floor.
The warm welcome from the owners and their beautifully crafted egg coffee will make the journey worthwhile. Don’t forget to stir well – the espresso packs a punch at the bottom!

  1. Cafe Pho Co: A Hidden Gem with Egg-cellent Coffee
Don’t blink or you might miss Cafe Pho Co (or Cà Phê Phố Cổ on Google maps)! Nestled discreetly within a bright red silk store (“Silklike”) on Hàng Gai street, this charming spot offers a delightful escape from the city’s buzz. Follow the corridor past the silks until you find the cafe’s sign.
While the entrance might be a secret, the delicious egg coffee is definitely worth the search. It’s easily one of the best in Hanoi. Trust me, one look at the picture (insert picture here) and your taste buds will be tingling! This hidden gem deserves a top spot on your Hanoi egg coffee adventure.

  1. The Note Coffee: Unexpected Delight and Instagram Paradise
The Note Coffee wasn’t on my egg coffee radar, but wow, what a pleasant surprise! Initially drawn by its “Instagrammable” walls adorned with colourful notes, I discovered a hidden gem – their incredible ca phe trung (egg coffee)! Whether you’re an egg coffee enthusiast or just seeking a unique experience, The Note Coffee is a must-visit.
Prepare to be uplifted by the positive vibes and heartwarming stories scribbled on the walls. It’s hard not to get swept up in the hopeful energy. While the details remain a secret, my experience at The Note Coffee was unforgettable. Oh, and did I mention the egg coffee? Absolutely delicious, and deserving a spot on my Hanoi egg coffee hall of fame. If you plan to linger and soak in the atmosphere like I did, two cups might be necessary!

Hanoi Egg Coffee Crawl: A Sweet (But Sweaty) Adventure
Hunting down Hanoi’s best egg coffee was a delightful challenge, but be warned: it’s not for the faint of heart. While many cafes are close together, some require good walking shoes. Plus, downing multiple egg coffees in one day might not be the healthiest option. If you take on this tasty quest, spread your visits out over a week or two for a more relaxed (and safe!) experience.
